Meet District 7: Randy Meyer

Randy Meyer has what many would consider a Dream Job—at least to those that like to travel. As Executive Director of Caring Hands Worldwide and Caring Hands International in Fall Creek, Oregon, Randy has occasion to regularly travel the world coordinating free dental health care to thousands who would otherwise suffer endlessly from toothache, oral cancer, and other diseases. Randy coordinates services and volunteers in clinics as widespread as Micronesia in the South Pacific, Zambia in Africa, Madagascar in the Indian Ocean, and Lane County, Oregon, which has its own Mobile Dental Clinic to provide free dental care to the uninsured and economically challenged.  He has also recently coordinated a health fair at the Lane County Fairgrounds which attracted about one thousand patients and hundreds of volunteers, as well as fairs in Spokane, Washington, Oakland, California, Pilot Rock, Oregon, and an upcoming one in Los Angeles, California, which will attract thousands of Patients. Randy accumulates a LOT of air miles. At home in Fall Creek,  Randy has a bustling household where he hosts travelers coming and going on charity business, university students to whom he offers hospitality and free room, extended family members, and his beloved flock of 35 goats that manicure his small Fall Creek Farm.  Randy had the travel urge before getting his current job.  After attending a one room school as a child in Fall Creek, he continued his education to obtain a Master of Social Work degree, which he promptly put to work in the remote Indigenous villages of Alaska. Following that stint, Randy and his wife Marta Prato assumed executive responsibilities at an orphanage in El Salvador for several years before returning home to Fall Creek. We are proud to have Randy as a resident of District 7, and we wish him well in his business...

On Easter Weekend the Mobile Dental Unit of Caring Hands Worldwide swung into action to serve Veterans at the Fall Creek Event Center. Veterans attending were served a substantial breakfast before rotating to the dental stations.  Services offered included examinations, x-rays, cleanings, fillings and extractions, as well as Life Style Counseling.  The veterans, who represented branches of service including the Marines, Navy, Airforce and Army ranged in age from 27 to 67, came from Oakridge, Springfield, Eugene, Lane Community College, and the University of Oregon. Many thanks to the 27 individuals who provided the care, including dentists and hygienists, dental assistants,  students, cooks,  and other community volunteers. This and other similar free dental clinics are made possible by the passage of House Bill 3139 which allows the placement and operation of mobile dental clinics on private property for up to 180 days a year, a bill introduced and sponsored by Representative Cedric Hayden. Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to all those who have protected our Nation and Freedoms in the service of our Country.  Thank...

Last week marked the beginning of preparations for 2016 re-election campaign

Last week, I made my intention to run for re-election official. It has been a pleasure serving the constituents of the 7th district in Salem, and it would be a pleasure to serve another two years. In my freshman year in the legislature, I have seen both tremendous good and bad, within our community and in enacted legislation. There is still much to be done in Salem to benefit District 7 and of Oregon. Having served as vice-chair of the House Health Care committee, I saw first hand the impact of inadequate mental health care access. Mental health care access has become one of the most glaring issues for our state, and is clearly an issue affecting  our district. If re-elected, I will continue working to address Oregon’s mental health access concerns. In the 2015 session, I sponsored bills pertaining to child oral care, student dental screenings, mobile care unit protection, and dental service for pregnant medical assistance recipients. This work derived from my dental practice, and the problems I saw that needed addressed. I truly hope my unique background in the field of dentistry will make a positive impact on the citizens and the industry here in Oregon in our hopes to better improve health care on all fronts I am dedicated advocating for the 7th district at the same energy and intensity as I did last session. Please contact me if you have questions or...
